When Roscoe Jones, a one-time trumpet prodigy, loses his finger, he loses more than his ability to play. Instead of becoming a musician, he becomes the superintendent of the Chicago apartment building where he has lived since birth. Very soon, his life is no longer his own; he fades into the background, plumbing and fixing and toiling for the tenants populating the eleven stories above him. Although they hardly notice him as anything but a working part of the building, he develops a sometimes uncomfortable intimacy with the details of their complicated lives.
Every night, in the privacy of his basement quarters, alone with his secret longings, he plays his trumpet. That is until the evening he climbs to the roof to play in public for the first time in fifty years — and the course of his life is irrevocably changed.
For some, losses may turn, unexpectedly, to gain. For Roscoe, the relationships he forms with the tenants — two, in particular — justify the amputation of his finger and the forfeiture of his dreams. This is a story about sacrifice and service, longing and love — and the abiding hopefulness of the human heart that connects us all.

11 Stories edition by Chris Cander Literature Fiction eBooks
I was drawn to each of Chris Cander's characters in 11 Stories. Each character was a bit unique based on my personal experiences, yet I could relate to each on some definite level. While reading 11 Stories, Cander challenged me on my personal knowledge. Her descriptive and well-researched writing taught this reader some history with her references to past events; various new words with her adjectives and situational references; and to consider and appreciate different people living in one small space.I felt that the main character, Roscoe, was complicated initially, but he became less complicated as I began to understand his personality and challenges with his job as a superintendent of the 11 story building. Roscoe guided us through his experiences, and he reminded me to appreciate how to deal with different people. Every one of us is going through something at some point in our lives whether it is happiness, sadness, challenges, peacefulness, diversity, or whatever else comes our way. Roscoe was exposed to various issues of the tenants and was forced to deal with matters that eventually became his own. I do have one problem with Cander's novel - I wish Roscoe lived in a taller building so we could get to know more people and their life experiences in the building!
I am a writer but write on a technical level for businesses. In my limited free time, I grab a fictional book to escape from my job's requirements of researching facts and writing from a completely different perspective. I read 11 Stories much faster than I thought and finished in the wee hours of the night based on my curiosity. I am looking forward to Cander's next novel. Is there one????

11 Stories edition by Chris Cander Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Columnist Rod Dreher once wrote that true artists undertake a journey to the depths of the human personality and return to tell the truth about what they've seen. In "11 Stories," Chris Cander takes a dive off the high board (no irony intended) into the depths of the human personality and comes back to tell us a many-faceted story about life and love. To me, the overriding theme seems to me to be that the essence of true "love" is the self-emptying of the individual in service to others. Of course, this is the essential definition of "agape," which, in turn, is the critical commandment to all of us who claim to wish to love others as God loves us. As far as I know, Ms. Cander is not a Christian and this is not an overtly religious novel. Instead, it is an intensely human novel, a work of art that tells us something universally significant about what the author has seen. Even in the course of loss, sorrow, and tragedy, what ultimately gives our lives meaning is found in the mystery of true love, in its purest form.
11 Stories by Chris Cander is a collection of vignettes about the relationships a superintendent has with tenants in eleven of the apartments in his building. Written from the point of view of Roscoe Jones who has lived in the building since he was born, this book explores how the relationships and intimacy we share with people irrevocably shapes who we are and influences the choices we make in life. Although the stories of each tenant's interactions with Roscoe could stand alone, they are woven together into an intricate narrative through which we slowly gain an understanding of why Roscoe ended up on the rooftop playing his trumpet that final time. Ms. Cander's strength as a writer is her character development, and she lovingly creates each of the characters in 11 Stories in such a way that the reader feels as if they could be their own neighbors. Her writing style is full of clarity and originality. I highly recommend this lovely and delightful story to any reader who appreciates high quality fiction and amazing character development.
Thank you!
11 Stories by Chris Cander is the first book I have read in a long time that drew me in so much so I didn't want to put it down - I might miss something. I also found myself reading more slowly so that I could savor the words and spend time with a collection of characters that captured my heart and imagination. As Roscoe tumbles past the people he served, befriended and loved, a reverse-weave tapestry of his life is revealed. What begins with a life that is seemingly very simple, becomes more intriguing with each story. The stories bring surprises, heartbreak, history and delight, told from carefully constructed words that draw on a rich and varied vocabulary. I look forward to Cander's next book, I only hope it is a little longer; I was sorry to turn the last page on this one. Perhaps a second read will tide me over.
If you like sad life stories, this will appeal to you. I found that there were only 2 stories that I liked, one had a surprise to it and the other made for a happier life story. The book was well written but out of 11 stories (which does have a double meaning) I would think there would be more happiness mixed with trials and tribulations that everyone has in life.
The beauty of this book is in the storytelling as we explore the humanity of Roscoe's life and the portrayal of his life.
The seeming small things in life sometimes are often the most overlooked. The failures of person can either shape the person or the person can take those failures and in turn shape their own destiny.
I have enjoyed reading what on the surface seems to be stories about Roscoe; and yet when I sit quietly and contemplate the words written; I realize that it makes me appreciate the beauty of people and our journey we call life. Chris Cander captures these feelings in her writing and weaves into words something that sticks with you and just makes you quietly smile and grin. Thanks Chris for a job well done!
